April 20, 2004, though, a Boeing Delta rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base with a highly sophisticated satellite designed to use mechanisms to test general relativity. To test Einstein's theory of general relativity, Gravity Probe B must measure two minuscule angles with spinning gyroscopes, floating in space. Gravity Probe B was launched in 2004 to test Einstein's theory of general relativity. However, we are still testing out all its predictions. NASA has just announced that Einstein's theory of gravity, also known as the General Theory of Relativity, has been verified in two ways by its Gravity Probe-B (GP-B) with astonishing accuracy [1]. Classical mathematical physics; Mathematical introduction to quantum mechanics; Geometry and symmetries in classical and QM, but not much QFT; Lorentzian geometry and general relativity; Integrable systems and solitons; Modern mathematical approaches to QFT and strings. This is the Gravity Probe B satellite. That's definitely true for physicists because the best interpretation of General Relativity supports B-Theory (though I've seen any physicist talk in terms of “A” or “B” Theory of Time). One of the most spectacular and successful ideas of the 20 Century was Einstein's General Relativity, or the idea that matter and energy determines the curvature of spacetime, and the curvature of spacetime in turn determines how gravitation works. Note Added 05 May 2011: A new story on the BBC website, Gravity Probe B confirms Einstein effects, further discusses the work of Gravity Probe B in demonstrating the frame-dragging effect of general relativity. Branes (mathematical aspects) . €The space-time around Earth appears to be distorted just as general relativity predicts,” says Stanford University physicist Francis Everitt, principal investigator of the Gravity Probe B mission. In particular, white dwarfs — like Sirius B, illustrated above — condense a Sun's worth of mass into a volume of only the Earth, creating spacetime that's curved 100 times more severely than at our Sun's photosphere. What are the 2 effects that was tested by GP-B? The idea of testing general relativity with orbiting gyroscopes was suggested independently by two physicists, George Pugh and Leonard Schiff, in late 1959-early 1960. For the non-physicists in the crowd, this was the change to gravity that Einstein introduced. General Relativity - The theory of the gravitational force The effect of gravity is indistinguishable from a state of constant acceleration, and disappears entirely in any frame of reference that is in freefall.
